      The Control Pane

      Control Pane Introduction


      The Control Pane is the primary Pane in Pena. It is always visible except when painting, and contains all the major icons that control the paint system.

      Most of the icons on the Control Pane will open other Panes to give you access to other controls.

      Regardless of what orientation you hold your device, the Control Pane will orient itself properly.

      This next section outlines the basic functionality of the Control Pane, or you can view the video tutorial Pena Tutorial #1 - User Interface Basics.

      Moving The Control Pane...

      The position of the Control Pane can be easily changed. On the left and right side of the Control Pane are up/down arrows. Tap and hold one of the arrows and drag the Control Pane. The Control Pane can be situated anywhere over the Canvas, but can not be moved off the screen.

      The Control Pane remembers its location independently for landscape and portrait orientation, and will appear in the same place it was previously put when you change your devices orientation.

      In general you will want to position the Control Pane over an area of the Canvas you are not currently working on.

      When you begin to paint on the Canvas, the Control Pane will instantly disappear, allowing you access to the full Canvas. When you stop painting, the Control Pane will reappear in the last location it was at.

      The Second Tap Indicator...

      Some icons on various Panes have a blue-green dot in the upper left corner of the icon. For example, these two icons from the Control Pane:

         

      This dot is a reminder to you that a second tap of this icon will produce an Option Pane that lets you set options for that icon.

       

      The Effects Pane


      Tapping the Effects Pane icon will make the Effects Pane appear. Use the Effects Pane to create the Effects you want to use while painting. The Effects Pane lets you create both Brush Effects and Surface Effects (Intelligent Canvas). You can also use the Effects Pane to save and load favorite Brush and Intelligent Canvas programs.

      Brush and Surface Programs can consists of up to 32 simultaneous Effects each, selected from a master list of Effects.

      The Texture Pane


      Tapping the Texture Pane icon will make the Texture Pane appear. The Texture Pane lets you create up to 5 Textures to use simultaneously in your painting. A Texture can be either a Photo from your Photo Album or Noise.

      While there is a limit to the size of a texture that openGL can use, Pena will detect photos that are too large and will ask if you want it to re-size the photo to a usable size.

      Depth Control


      The Depth Control icon is a toggle switch. Tapping it toggles it between on and off:

      Depth Control is turned OFF
      Depth Control is turned ON

      In technical terms, this button controls the openGL Depth Buffer. In artistic terms, this button controls whether paint is laid above or below previous paint in your current stroke.

      This only affects a painting stroke. That is, what happens from the time you tap, hold, and start painting, to the time you lift your finger. Pre-existing paint is not affected by this button, only paint as you are painting it.

      The following picture illustrates what this looks like. In this picture we are using a photo texture of our African Grey parrot, Harry. The brush is round and we have an incremental rotation causing it to spin:

      Our drawing stroke direction is from the bottom towards the top. That is, we tapped, held, and dragged from bottom to top, then lifted our finger.

      The left side shows Depth Control OFF. You can see that new paint is laid above old paint, and that when we lifted our finger, the full texture was on the top.

      The right side shows Depth Control ON. You can see that new paint is now going below old paint, and the full texture is the first paint that went down.

      Again, keep in mind that only affects the drawing stroke itself. If there is already painting on the screen, you are painting on top of that - however, this button affects the paint itself while you are painting it.

      One important note is that if you are using the Airbrush Effect, you will most likely want Depth Control turned off to get the desired output.

       

      Save and Load


      The Save and Load icon is one of four save/load mechanisms in Pena. It is, however, the most powerful and primary saving and loading system of the four.

      When you tap the Save/Load icon you first receive the following Pop Up:

      Tap the Cancel button to dismiss the Pop Up without taking any action. Otherwise the following choices are available:

      • Save Painting - Select this to save any aspect of your current painting.
      • Load Painting - Select this to load any aspect of any previously saved painting.
      • Capture Painting To Photo Album - Select this to have your current Canvas captured to your Photo Album. When you view it in the iPad Photo application you can rotate it, EMail it, and share it.
      You can see that we used the term any aspect. That is important here - as that is what makes the Save/Load system extremely powerful.

      When you save and load paintings you can specify exactly what you want to save, or load. This includes the settings for the following: Brushes, Clocks, Color Palette, Preferences, the five Texture/Noise settings, the Selection Buffer, Brush Programs, Surface Programs, Paste Buffer, Drawing Buffer, Surface Buffer, Selection Buffer, Undo Buffer, and the actual Painting.

      Flood Screen


      The Flood Screen icon is very useful for not only painting but also in creating the exact Effect you are looking for.

      Tap Flood Screen to apply the current Brush and Surface programs to the entire screen. It is as if you had a brush exactly shaped like the screen, and you tapped in the middle of the screen.

      Many times you will create a background that you will then paint on. You might select one of the Procedural Shader Effects or Special Effect programs and have it applied to the entire background. This button makes doing that very simple.

      Another use for this feature is setting up Effects you are going to then paint with. By making changes in the Effects Pane and tapping the Flood icon you can see what your current settings look like, applied to the entire screen. You might do this several times to get the exact look you are going for, prior to actually starting painting.

      The action of the Flood Button can be Undone.

       

      Drawing Control


      One technique often employed in digital painting is using the current painting as input for the new painting. For example, you could use the current painting as a texture in some way. After you are done painting, you could use the new results as the next texture to keep modifying the painting.

      A limitation in openGL ES 2.0 does not allow us to dynamically use the Canvas while painting - that is, we can not use it as a feedback loop while you are painting. The limit requires us to only allow use of the existing Canvas after you are done painting.

      Pena keeps a copy of your current painting in a special Drawing Canvas. This Drawing Canvas can act as a Texture. There are numerous Brush and Surface Effects that can use the Drawing Canvas as input.

      The Drawing Control Icon lets you control how this Drawing Canvas is handled and updated.

      When you tap the Drawing Control Icon you will see the following Pop Up:

      Tap the Cancel button to dismiss the Pop Up without taking any action. Otherwise the following choices are available:

      • Turn Drawing Auto-Copy Off or Turn Drawing Auto-Copy On
      • Copy To Drawing Now
      Normally Pena will automatically copy your painting to the Drawing Canvas when you lift your finger after painting.

      That means if you are using any programs that use the Drawing Canvas as input, each time you paint you will get the most recent drawing as that input.

      This is the default way Drawing Control works, and in this mode Drawing Control is considered turned On.

      There may be times, however, when you do not want the Drawing Canvas to automatically be updated each time you are done painting. You may want to freeze the Drawing Canvas so it only changes when you want it to change.

      If you do not want the Drawing Canvas to automatically update, select the Turn Drawing Auto-Copy Off choice. If you want to go back to automatic update, select the Turn Drawing Auto-Copy On choice (the proper choice will be displayed depending on the status of Drawing Auto-Copy).

      The state of Drawing Auto-Copy is shown by the icon:

      Drawing Auto-Copy is turned OFF
      Drawing Auto-Copy is turned ON

      When Drawing Auto-Copy is turned Off, the drawing is frozen in the Drawing Canvas. In this case you use the Copy To Drawing Now choice when you want to copy your current drawing into the Drawing Canvas.

       

      Brush Pane


      When you paint in Pena, you pick a basic shape which becomes your Brush.

      Pena Brushes are very basic geometry, but can be modified in a number of ways to produce a variety of interesting shapes.

      The Brush Pane Icon allows you to access the Brush Pane. The Brush Pane lets you setup what your brush looks like. The Brush Pane offers the following features:

      • Brush Shape - Define a basic brush shape from circle, ellipse, square, and rectangular.
      • Brush Rotation - Define a rotation angle for the brush. You can also create brushes that have a rotation angle that changes as you paint.
      • Brush Taper - Define a taper rate and size. The brush can grow or shrink in size dynamically as you paint.
      • Fit To Texture - Size a brush to fit one of the five loaded textures.
      • Clocks - Setup four clocks. Clocks can modify brushes and brush/surface programs as you paint.
      • Save/Load Brushes - An independent Save and Load system lets you save and load favorite brush settings.
      Since brushes define an area of paint coverage only, and not the paint itself, the paint can modify the shape of a brush. For example, if you are painting with a texture, the brush can take on the shape of the texture.

      Note that a couple of Effects let you modify your brush shape. Airbrush and Stipple Brush Effects are two such Effects that when added to your current brush, convert it into an Airbrush or Stipple brush.

      Dot Brush


      The Brush Pane let you setup the basic brush shape and settings. The Dot Brush applies that brush as individual dots when you paint.

      There are three ways a brush can be applied: Dot, Line, and Curve.

      For Dot, as you drag your finger along the Canvas your paint will be deposited as fast as it can. Depending on the size of your brush and the complexity of your paint, this will appear more or less connected:

      If the program is very complex, there may be spacing between each brush of paint deposited.

      If the program is fairly simple, the spacing may be so small that that paint appears continuous.

      The individual brushes are not connected to each other, they are just placed as fast as possible.

      Of the three drawing modes, this is the fastest.

       

      Line Brush


      The Brush Pane let you setup the basic brush shape and settings. The Line Brush applies that brush as connected by a hidden line when you paint.

      There are three ways a brush can be applied: Dot, Line, and Curve.

      For Line, as you drag your finger along the Canvas your paint will be deposited as fast as it can. Depending on the size of your brush and the complexity of your paint, this will appear more or less connected.

      In Line mode, each brush will be connected to the previous brush by a hidden line. The brush will be applied to each point along that line:

      This results in lines that are smooth, rather than having gaps as with Dot mode. In Line mode, each brush is always connected to the previous one by a series of brushes.

      However, if the program is very complex, this may be very slow, as a huge number of brush hits are generated.

      The density of each brush along the line can be controlled. While the Line Mode is in Effect (icon lit) tap it a second time. You will get an option Pop Up:

      Swipe the thumb wheel left or right to modify the value, or tap the number to enter the desired value via the keyboard.

      The higher the number, the larger the gap between brushes along the line. You can use this to make dotted and dashed lines or just speed up line style drawing.

      If painting becomes too slow in Line mode, go back to Dot mode.

      Of the three drawing modes, this is neither the faster nor the slowest.

       

      Curved Brush


      The Brush Pane let you setup the basic brush shape and settings. The Curved Brush applies that brush as connected by a hidden curve (spline) when you paint.

      There are three ways a brush can be applied: Dot, Line, and Curve.

      For Curve, as you drag your finger along the Canvas your paint will be deposited as fast as it can. Depending on the size of your brush and the complexity of your paint, this will appear more or less connected.

      In Curve mode, each brush will be connected to the previous brush by a hidden curve. The brush will be applied to each point along that curve:

      This results in lines that are smoother than Lines.

      However, if the program is very complex, this may be very slow, as a huge number of brush hits are generated.

      The density of each brush along the curve can be controlled. While the Curve Mode is in Effect (icon lit) tap it a second time. You will get an option Pop Up:

      Swipe the thumb wheel left or right to modify the value, or tap the number to enter the desired value via the keyboard.

      The higher the number, the larger the gap between brushes along the curve. You can use this to make dotted and dashed curve or just speed up curve style drawing.

      If painting becomes too slow in Curve mode, go back to Line or Dot mode.

      Of the three drawing modes, this is the slowest.

       

      Color 1


      The paint brush in Pena is fed two colors. Color 1 and Color 2. After that, various Brush and Surface Effects modify or replace them before Color 1 is drawn to the Canvas.

      Color 1 is the Primary Color - the color that is drawn to the Canvas.

      By default, Color 1 is set to white. However, you can change that by tapping the Color 1 Icon and using the Color Picker to change the color.

      If you have no Brush or Surface Effects in use, Color 1 will be drawn, as it is, to the screen. Otherwise it will be most likely be used, modified, or replaced by the various Effects.

      Color 2


      The paint brush in Pena is fed two colors. Color 1 and Color 2. After that, various Brush and Surface Effects modify or replace them before Color 1 is drawn to the Canvas.

      Color 2 is an additional Color - it is never drawn to the Canvas, but can be used by the Brush and Surface Effects to modify Color 1.

      By default, Color 2 is set to black. However, you can change that by tapping the Color 2 Icon and using the Color Picker to change the color.

      If you have no Brush or Surface Effects in use, Color 2 is ignored. Otherwise it will be most likely be used, modified, or replaced by the various Effects.

      Selection Pane


      Use the Selection Pane to create Selection Masks. Selection Masks are used in four different ways:

      • Inhibit Drawing - Use Selection Masks to create areas of the screen that you can only draw on. All other areas can not be painted on until you change the selection areas.
      • Define Intelligent Canvas - Selection Masks are used to create your Intelligent Canvas Surfaces.
      • Create Text - Selection Masks are used to create text in your painting. Any of the built-in iPad fonts can be used as your font.
      • Copy and Paste - You can use Selection Masks to copy existing areas of your painting and paste it other places. The paste can be rotated and re-sized as you desire.
      The Selection Pane lets you create Selection Masks in a number of ways:

      • Circles - You can define any circular, oval, or elliptical masked area. These areas can be rotated and re-sized.
      • Squares - You can define any square, or rectangular masked area. These areas can be rotated and re-sized.
      • Freehand - You can paint and erase freehand selection areas. Your current brush shape and size is used while painting.
      • Magic Wand - You can use a magic wand to select areas of a painting. The tolerance of the wand can be specified.
      • Text - You can use text to create or erase selection mask areas. The font and text size, orientation, rotation, and scaling can be controlled.
      When creating mask areas they can be added to existing areas, removed from existing areas, and inverted with existing areas.

      You can toggle whether or not you are using your Selection Masks with the Use Masks Icon.

      Use Mask


      The Use Mask icon toggles whether or not Selection Masks are being used.

      If you have no Selection Masks defines, and you tap the Use Mask icon, you will see the following message:

      If you do have Selection Areas, tapping the Use Mask icon will toggle the use of Selection Areas On and Off:

      Use Selection Masks is turned OFF
      Use Selection Masks is turned ON

      Selection Masks can only be used as Paint Masks when the Use Mask icon is On.

      Note that Selection Masks can be used to create Intelligent Canvas Surface areas at any time, and do not require the Use Mask icon to be on.

       

      Undo/Redo


      Each time before you start painting, Pena captures your current painting into an Undo Canvas. If you make a mistake you can tap the Undo icon and have the previous painting restored.

      Undo is also Redo. If you tap Undo, restoring your previous drawing, and decide that you liked what you painted anyway, you can Undo the Undo (Redo).

      There is only one level of Undo/Redo - you can not move backwards through your painting history more than one step.

       

      Trash Can


      Tapping the Trash Can icon will produce the following Pop Up:

      Tap the Cancel button to dismiss the Pop Up without taking any action. Otherwise the following choices are available:

      • Clear Screen - Select this to have your current drawing cleared. All painting will be cleared and the background color will be visible. You can use the Undo button to undo this action.
      • Change Back Light Color - The Pena Canvas surface acts as if it has a Back Light behing it. By default the Back Light is black. By selecting this choice you can change the Back Light color. A Color Picker will appear that lets you select the desired Back Light color. Note that the Back Light is not paint and can not be erased. Changing the Back Light, even with painting on the Canvas, will change the Back Light everywhere it is visible.
      • Clear Surface to No Programs - If you are using Surface Programs (Intelligent Canvas) this choice will clear all programs from the Surface. The Surface Effects set in the Effects Pane are not affected, but painting on the screen will no longer have any Surface Effects applied. You can also toggle Surface Programs on and off in the Effects Pane. Note that selecting this choice does not make any noticeable visual change to the painting (Since the Surface is always invisible). You will use this choice when you want to completely reprogram your Surface. This action can not be undone.

       

      View Canvas


      When not actively painting, Pena always displays the Control Pane. However, sometimes you would just like to see the Canvas itself.

      Tapping the View Canvas icon will hide the Control Pane and allow you to view the entire Canvas.

      To restore the Control Pane, tap the screen again.

      If, instead of tapping the Control Pane to restore it, you tap and drag to start painting, you will begin painting. This gives you a way to see the entire Canvas and then start painting without having the Control Pane in the way.

       

      Preferences


      Tap the Preferences Pane icon to display the Preferences Pane. This Pane lets you set and control a few features of Pena.

      Most features in Pena have individual controls in other Panes. The Preferences Pane has a few global settings and other controls that are more general than specific:

      • Anti-alias - Turns Anti-Aliasing on and off. Anti-Aliasing defaults to on. Anti-Aliasing is the smoothing of jagged edges to give a higher resolution appearance.
      • Left Handed - Certain controls, such as the Eyedropper, are oriented for right handed painters. If you are left handed, setting the Left Handed option will change those controls to be better oriented for the left hand.
      • Pane auto-close - Normally Panes and sub-Panes stay open until you close them. When Pane auto-close is set Panes will close down to the Control Pane when painting.
      • Reset Clock on Paint - This option defaults to On. Each time you start painting on the Canvas, Pena will reset the four Clocks to their starting values. If you wish the clocks to not be reset each time you start painting, turn this option off.
      • Draw Surface First - Normally the Brush Effects are executed first, then the Surface Effects. Setting the Draw Surface First reverses this and puts Surface Effects ahead of the Brush Effects. Depending on how your programs are setup, this will produce different results.
      • Wacom Bluetooth Stylus - This option lets you use the Wacom bluetooth stylus for painting. Pena recognizes Pressure and Button functions from the stylus.
      • Jot Bluetooth Stylus - This option lets you use the Jot bluetooth stylus for painting. Pena recognizes Pressure and Button functions from the stylus.
      • Reset Pena - This button will let you reset Pena back to the factory defaults. No paintings are lost, but all settings throughout Pena return to their original default settings. Using this option requires you to exit and restart Pena.
      • View Help - This button will load the Pena Help manual (what you are reading now) in Mobile Safari on your iPad.
      • Pena Version - At the bottom of the Preference Pane is the current version and copyright information for Pena.
